How to stop hacking attempts on xmlrpc.php in WordPress Blogs?

While Monitoring my server i noticed bulk traffic to xmlrpc.php files in my hosted websites. As this is a shared server, so there are over 40 wordpress installations in it. And that day i have noticed a continuous attack on 8 websites, a single request on xmlrpc.php took average 200MB to 250MB of memory and these requests were continuous 10 to 20 per second on each website. Which results in system instability and caused my server out of memory then eventually crashed.

Now a days hackers started using xmlrpc.php instead of wp-login.php to execute their brute force attacks and the problem is, since wordpress version 3.5 we can’t disable the use of xmlrpc.php at least not from wordpress settings. But there are few ways, lets discuss them one by one.

1. Deleting xmlrpc.php
This is not recommended as after every wordpress update this file will be replaced so its not the smartest way to deal with.

How to Enable unicode utf-8 characters in wordpress blog title

Unicode and WordPress

Sometime back… I was trying to put unicode characters(utf-8) in the title of a blog from wp-admin > settings > general. After saving it became like ?????????.

All pages had utf-8 in their meta tags so the issue was somewhere else. A working solution was found :

1. Go to phpmyadmin and select the database of this blog
2. Select table wp_options and then click operations. In table options box change collation to utf8_unicode_ci which is the last option.
3. Also change the collation of individual columns e.g.option_value to utf8_unicode_ci

Changing the table and column collation property made the thing work right.

How to Display last modified date of posts in wordpress

There is a blue spot at the end of this post which mentions the “Updated” date. It is the date on which this particular post last modified or updated. Since I keep most of the old posts from time to time, thought it would be a good idea to display the date in the post well.Add the following code at the end of the current theme functions.php update.

function add_post_content($content)
    return $content . '<div class="updated_on">Last Updated On : ' . get_the_modified_time('jS F Y') .'</div>';
add_filter('the_content', 'add_post_content' , 9);

The function get_the_modified_time gets the modified time of the current post in any given format. The same is added to the post content using the ‘add_filter’ api function.

The add_filter takes a second parameter called priority. Default is 10, giving anything lesser will mean a higher priority. So we specify 9 to make it higher in priority. Higher priority is needed since many plugins also modify the contents of the post so this function must be able to execute before any other code gets in.
